tHE FEMININE, SCARED AND MATERNAL

These artworks look back at Cameron's sensitive and tender depictions of the feminine, sacred and maternal, who herself in turn looks back to the bible, folklaw and the mystic for inspiration. I particularly enjoyed this concentric type of repetition, both myself and Cameron drawing on the power of retrospection and the classical to create a romantic mode of storytelling. I am continually inspired by Cameron's evocative depiction of the feminine through a female gaze, it is so quetening and empowered. She was a photographic visionary and recognised as an artist in her own time, which was almost unheard of the 19th Century. These ink drawings and paintings are a homage to her talent and artistic success, I often revisit a book of her works I have on my studio shelf whenever I am in need of creative refreshment and joy.

This series was first shown at Art Unit’s ‘Unity: British and Ukrainian Art’ exhibition, bringing together works by Ukrainian and British artists.
The exhibition represents a cultural thread between the two countries. Creating impactful and meaningful connections between the artists, their works, and practices. The relationship that has developed between the UK and Ukraine in the past six months created an unbreakable bond. The relationship has strengthened the political, social, martial, and cultural connections between Ukraine and the United Kingdom. We aim to develop that bond by bringing together the works of emerging artists from both countries and displaying them side by side as a display of the unity between two great countries.
